Our School
St. Eunan’s National School is a vibrant, welcoming five-teacher primary school, ideally located just outside Laghey village on the Donegal Town–Sligo road. Supported by two Special Education teachers and an EAL teacher, our school community reflects a rich diversity of cultures, faiths, and backgrounds. While under the patronage of the Diocese of Raphoe, St. Eunan’s proudly embraces inclusivity, ensuring every child feels valued, supported, and encouraged to reach their full potential.
With a current enrolment of 127 pupils, St. Eunan’s offers a wide range of modern facilities designed to promote academic excellence, physical development, and social wellbeing. Our dedicated Special Education team, consisting of two teachers and five SNAs, provides tailored School Support Plans to meet the needs of children with additional and complex learning and physical needs in a nurturing and supportive environment.
The school boasts five bright, fully equipped classrooms, a staffroom, and two fully wheelchair-accessible Special Education rooms. Outdoors, pupils enjoy exceptional facilities including a 3G all-weather pitch and a full-size basketball court. These spaces are in constant use, supporting our strong commitment to active learning, movement, and healthy lifestyles throughout the school day.
St. Eunan’s National School has proudly been awarded the Amber Flag, a national award that recognises the promotion of positive mental health and wellbeing for both students and staff. The Student Council plays a central role in school life, with a strong voice in the governance and day-to-day activities of the school.
The school implements both the Play & Connect and ASPIRE programmes as part of its commitment to promoting pupil wellbeing. Play & Connect supports children in developing positive relationships with sports and a sense of belonging through structured play, connection, and safe interaction, while ASPIRE provides targeted, strengths-based support to enhance social, emotional, and behavioural skills, resilience, and engagement with learning. Both programmes emphasise positive relationships, pupil voice, and inclusive practice, complementing the school’s Wellbeing Policy and fostering a supportive, nurturing school environment.
As well as this the school has been involved in the Green Schools programme for over thirteen years. Our environmental initiatives have inspired pupils to explore and care for their surroundings through activities such as nature walks around Donegal Town, and the local village. The school has earned its fifth Green Flag for Biodiversity, celebrated through the development of a school garden and sensory area that enhances learning and wellbeing. Previous flags include Litter and Waste, Energy,Water, Travel and Global Citizenship Litter and Waste.
Alongside the delivery of a rich and balanced curriculum, St. Eunan’s benefits greatly from the talents and expertise of our local and wider community. Pupils enjoy a broad range of extracurricular opportunities including music, computer skills, swimming lessons, drama, art, and history workshops. Visiting artists, historians, cartoonist, and parent volunteers regularly enrich the learning experience, helping to spark creativity, curiosity, and confidence in our pupils.
Sport plays a central role in school life. Pupils participate in Gaelic football, basketball, wheelchair basketball, golf, athletics, and Cumann na mBunscol competitions, both indoor and outdoor. Our commitment to physical activity and wellbeing is further supported through mindfulness programmes and participation in the HSE’s Súgradh le Chéile initiative, contributing to the school’s achievement of the Active Schools Flag.
ICT is central to the learning and development of our pupils. The school provides Chromebooks, a dedicated computer teacher, Bee-Bots, Plus Plus and Lego Spikes. These tools and activities make learning interactive, engaging, and enjoyable, while supporting the development of digital literacy skills and confidence.
As a Catholic school, St. Eunan’s places great importance on nurturing faith and spirituality. Pupils actively participate in Catholic Schools Week, St. Brigid’s Day celebrations, sacramental preparation, school choirs, and liturgical celebrations throughout the year, including Christmas and Easter. Whilst we are a Catholic school we welcome children of all faiths.
Is gné láidir de shaol na scoile í cur chun cinn na Gaeilge. Spreagtar an Ghaeilge go laethúil trí cheachtanna tarraingteacha idirghníomhacha a chuimsíonn cluichí, drámaíocht, amhráin, filíocht agus ealaín. Le linn Sheachtain na Gaeilge, glacann na daltaí páirt i raon leathan gníomhaíochtaí ar nós Lá Glas, tráth na gceist, damhsa céilí, ceolchoirmeacha agus cluichí boird, a cheiliúrann cultúr agus féiniúlacht na hÉireann. Bronntar teastais ar dhaltaí a dhéanann iarracht speisialta Gaeilge a úsáid i rith na seachtaine.
The promotion of the Irish language is a strong feature of school life. Gaeilge is encouraged daily through engaging, interactive lessons incorporating games, drama, songs, poetry, and art. During Seachtain na Gaeilge, pupils take part in a wide range of activities such as Lá Glas, quizzes, céilí dancing, concerts, and board games, celebrating Irish culture and identity. Certificates are awarded to pupils who make a special effort to use Gaeilge throughout the week.
